Open loop tank: is the standard tank used to store hot water. In an open loop tank the user uses the water that runs through the collector. The tank has a built in electric back-up unit and a thermostat to insure hot water even on cloudy and cold days. A thick layer of insulation keeps the water temperature steady for more than 72 hours. Closed loop tank: or heat exchanger tank is used when there is a higher risk for scale build up in the pipes. In order to protect the pipes from being blocked the water heats up in the collector and runs through a closed loop heat exchanger in the tank and heats the water for the user. The tank has a built in electric back-up unit and a thermostat to insure hot water even in cloudy and cold days. A thick layer of insulation keeps the water temperature steady for more than 72 hours.
